How to overcome hurdles in Podcasting in the entertainment , social-cultural and youth affairs space

In 2020 when the world was dealing with the global pandemic of the Corona Virus, the resulting lockdown measures necessitated many creatives to reorganize their approach to work. Personally,  the shift to digital platforms and embracing became a necessity in order to keep up with the rest of the world. Around the same time, my passion for podcasting sprouted and I began to research the best podcasting options which later led me to starting out on the creating of my first podcast titled the African ways podcast focused on people and culture connections.

At the drawing board for every new passion project comes the question of who will help you take the first step and what tools do you require. My Experience with podcasting was no different, I reached out to a friend who had previously worked with an  online radio and started to enquire about the hardware and software I needed to set up a podcast. Luckily my friend did not hesitate to furnish me with details and he was in fact quite supportive of my ambition and endeavor to get into the podcasting space.

With the research and tools on my hand, I realized that my area of interest which was people and culture ant the time was a bit too limiting and therefore, I had to expand my scope. I also came to understand that most of my to-be audiences would be mainly youth  and also that they needed to be entertained and not only informed through the podcast content I intended to create. With the information and mind set to create and test the waters,  I was set to get on board , create engaging conversations that sparked new thing towards the matters I was addressing.

Through my journey of four years as a podcaster, I realized than one can easily fall off due to the many hurdles on the way to success. How to overcome the challenges therefore, becomes a matter of mindset and approach. It is never to late to re-calibrate and organize your podcast differently as the organic evolution of a podcast is necessary for growth. A key too for overcoming challenges such as low engagement is proper RESEARCH. The need to thoroughly research not only your material for presentation but also research on the audience is imperative just like a engine needs oil to work  properly.

The research required of you would come in many forms including through survey and also involving other peers or would be listeners. Integrating all feedback and evaluating what works and what doesn't is the key to the process. Once the format, content, structure and means of delivery is founded, the next hurdle becomes apparent, in the sense of how do you maintain CONSISTENCY  in your productivity making the podcast episodes tat with impact you and your audience.

The goal of achieving productivity through consistency can be realized through a proper Scheduled guided by the overall objective of the podcast. For instance, if you need to create and publish three podcasts weekly, its only logical to work with a proper content publishing schedule that helps you optimize listenership and engagement on  your platforms. Having an accountability team or partner will also help eliminate the lag or tendency to sleep on the job.

With a team or peers to help navigate the way forward the overall goal or objective is the ultimate guide and perhaps in a way of a mission and vision statement well articulated, through research, consistency and collaboration you will succeed. In particular regard to social cultural and youth affair focused podcast, a deep understanding of the audience and a connection with the people will result to better results and growth trajectory for your podcast.

A pursuit of success is a continuous journey and each day a podcaster must ask themselves critical questions including how can I get better and improve consistently and how can I revitalize the feel and the energy in my podcasting work? Wishing you a great podcasting experience this month. Feel free to listen to the latest episodes of our podcast on podcast episodes to listen to
