Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. The thyroid plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism by producing hormones that influence nearly every organ in the body. In Graves' disease, the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to produce excessive amounts of thyroid hormones, a condition known as hyperthyroidism.
