Maurine Juma is a rising star in the Kenyan fashion and pageant industry, known for her elegance, confidence, and passion for environmental advocacy. Crowned as Miss BIFA (Buruburu Institute of Fine Arts) and Miss Environment Kakamega County 1st Runners-Up, Maurine has made a name for herself with her impeccable style and unwavering commitment to using her platform to inspire and empower others. Her journey in the world of fashion and pageantry showcases not only her beauty but also her dedication to promoting sustainability and positive change in her community.

We had an opportunity for an interview with the self-determined and talented model Maurine Juma, check it out below;

 1. Can you tell us about your journey into the fashion industry? What inspired you to pursue modeling?

My modeling journey began with my passion for art and self-expression. As an art student, I’ve always admired how fashion and modeling bring art to life. Winning titles like Miss BIFA and 1st runner-up for Miss Environment Kakamega County further inspired me to embrace modeling as a platform for showcasing creativity and promoting meaningful causes.

2. What has been the most memorable moment in your modeling career so far?

One of the most memorable moments was winning the Miss BIFA title. It wasn’t just about walking the runway; it was my dream coming true because that's what I had dreamed of since I joined BIFA. The recognition I received solidified my purpose in using modeling for impactful storytelling.

3. How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or runway show? Do you have any special routines or rituals?

Preparation starts with understanding the theme and vision of the event. I stay hydrated and practice poses or walks that align with my mood. Before stepping out, I take a moment to center myself, visualize success, and remind myself to enjoy the moment.

4. What challenges have you faced in the modeling industry, and how have you overcome them?

The biggest challenge has been dealing with self-doubt in such a competitive industry. I’ve learned to focus on my unique strengths and surround myself with supportive people. Continuous learning and staying true to my values have helped me grow.

5. How would you describe your style, and how does it influence your work as a model?

My style is a blend of elegance and versatility. I love pieces that tell a story and reflect individuality. This adaptability helps me connect with different concepts and brands in my work.

6. What advice would you give aspiring models looking to enter the industry?

Be confident in your unique qualities and stay persistent. Networking and building a portfolio are essential, but so is taking care of your mental and physical health. Believe in your journey and remain professional at every opportunity.

7. Who are your biggest influences or role models in the fashion industry?

I’m inspired by models who use their platforms for advocacy, like Naomi Campbell and Adut Akech. They’ve shown that modeling can be more than beauty it can be a voice for change.

8. How do you stay fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle to meet the demands of modeling?

I focus on balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and staying hydrated. Mental health is equally important, so I prioritize rest, mindfulness, and doing things that make me happy.

9. What do you enjoy most about being a fashion model, and what do you find the most challenging?

What I enjoy most is the creative collaboration bringing designers’ visions to life. The challenge is staying consistent and motivated in an industry that demands constant reinvention, but that’s also what makes it exciting.

10. How do you handle criticism and maintain confidence in such a competitive industry?

Criticism is part of growth. I’ve learned to separate constructive feedback from negativity and use it to improve. Staying grounded and focusing on my progress helps me maintain confidence.

11. Are there any specific designers, brands, or campaigns you dream of working with in the future?

I’d love to work with brands that align with my values, such as promoting sustainability or inclusivity. Collaborating with international designers like Job Brain Jura of home_254 or International campaigns like Vogue would be a dream come true.

12. What are your future goals and aspirations beyond modeling? Do you have any interests in other areas of fashion or business?

In addition to being a commercial model who advertises brands, I am also an interior designer. I’m passionate about creating beautiful, functional spaces that reflect personality and style. In the future, I hope to expand my work in both fields, blending interior design and modeling to collaborate with brands and showcase their vision in innovative ways.
