1. Who are you, and how did your journey into fashion modeling begin?
My name is Hellen Ochong, also known as Kenyan Melanin. I’m a high fashion and commercial model based in Kenya. My modeling journey began in childhood—it has always been my passion. From a young age, I knew I wanted to be part of the fashion world, and I’ve followed that dream ever since.
2. What does fashion mean to you personally, and how would you describe your style?
Fashion, to me, is more than just clothing—it’s an enjoyable, passionate career. I love experimenting with every fashion trend and piece. I believe every outfit tells a story and showcases creativity. Each designer’s work deserves to be embraced, celebrated, and recognized by the world.
3. What has been your most memorable modeling experience so far, and why?
One of my most memorable moments was participating in the East Africa Bikini Fashion Week 2023. It was such an honor to showcase at a major event where I interacted with designers and creatives from all over the world. Another highlight was winning Most Innovative Model of the Year at the Coast Awards 2025. Achieving such titles isn’t easy—it takes belief in oneself, dedication, and resilience. I’m truly grateful for those milestones.
4. How do you stay confident and grounded in such a competitive industry?
I stay grounded by believing in myself. Confidence is built through consistency, and that’s the key to achieving success in this field.
5. Which Kenyan or international designers or fashion icons inspire you the most?
Locally, I’m inspired by Kenyan Raw, a talented designer creating top-notch attires from collected fabric pieces. Internationally, Naomi Campbell and Gigi Hadid have influenced me deeply with their hard work and resilience.
6. How do you think the Kenyan fashion scene is evolving, and where do you see it heading?
Kenya’s fashion industry is one of the best in Africa. In the next 5 to 10 years, I believe the world’s top designers will come from Kenya. Our strength lies in creativity and blending diverse cultural elements into designs that speak globally.
7. What advice would you give to young Kenyan girls who dream of becoming fashion models?
Don’t just dream—understand the worth of the gift and passion inside you. Step out with courage and embrace your talent. Never feel ashamed of it—there’s a purpose behind every gift. Own it, and give it your all.
