Meet Kenyan Make up Artist And Fashion Enthusiast Gloria

In this exclusive interview, we dive into the world of Gloria, a talented makeup artist and passionate Kenyan fashion enthusiast. With her eye for detail and natural talent, Gloria has quickly made a name for herself in the beauty and fashion industries. From her innovative makeup looks to her unique sense of style, Gloria is dedicated to enhancing beauty and inspiring confidence in those she works with. In this conversation, she opens up about her journey in the beauty industry, her passion for fashion, and the exciting projects she has in store.

 1.       Who are you and how would you like to introduce yourself?

My name is Gloria, I am a makeup artist with 5 years of experience delivering high-end makeup services for clients. I am passionate about making each and every client feel fabulous in their own skin.

2.       2.What inspired you to become a makeup artist, and how did your journey into the beauty industry begin?

I have always been fascinated by how makeup can transform a look and boost confidence. I also love the creativity that comes with it. Seeing someone light up after a makeover is just the best feeling.  My journey into the beauty industry started with a love for art and self-expression. I was always experimenting with colors and techniques, and it just felt natural to dive deeper into makeup. I also wanted to help others to feel beautiful and confident. I joined a beauty school after high school levels where we were not allowed to attend classes without makeup. That rule made me sharpen my skills and gained a lot of interest in the beauty industry.

3.       3.As a Kenyan makeup artist, how would you think the local beauty industry has evolved over the years?

The local beauty industry has evolved significantly over the years, with a growing emphasis on diversity and inclusivity. More brands are recognizing the need for products that cater to different skin tones and types, which is fantastic. Additionally, social media has played a huge role in shaping trends and giving makeup artists a platform to showcase their work. Its exciting to see how technology and innovation continue to influence the industry.

4.       4.Do you have any particular style or signature look that you are known for, and how you develop it?

My signature makeup look is a flawless natural beauty look. The look is so versatile and classic. It gives off that natural beauty vibe that is perfect for any occasion. Whether its subtle glow or a soft, natural palette that can enhance your features without looking too overdone. Many makeup artists often develop a signature look that reflects their creativity and skills. This could be anything from bold, colorful eye makeup to natural, glowing skin. Its great to have a style that clients can recognize and associate with you.

5.      5. Can you tell us about some of the challenges you’ve faced as a makeup artist, and how you’ve overcome them?

There are various challenges that we face in the industry. From keeping up with the ever-changing trends to working with different skin types and tones, there is always something new to learn and adapt. Finding the right products for each client and staying creative while meeting their expectations can also be a challenge.

A challenge I experienced sometimes back when I was not used to the industry is, I happened to get a client who I had to work with her and her bridal team. We organized a brief meeting physically and came to an agreement. A day to the wedding, I had to shop for more products since I was to work with different skin types and tones. After I was done with the shopping, I received a message from her that she no longer needed my services because of unavoidable circumstances. It really broke my heart for real. The best part about it, is the products I purchased made me advertise myself more. I felt I had more than enough products a makeup artist should have. I learnt my lesson anyway. From that incidence I work on clients with an advance deposit paid. Despite these obstacles, the passion for makeup industry keeps me going!

6.       6.What are some of your favorite products or brands to work with, and why?

When it comes to favorite makeup products or brands, as a makeup artist I have my go-to choices that I love to work with. Kiss Beauty is the best and affordable especially to the newbies. Maybelline offers a wide range of products suitable for various skin tones and types, allowing makeup artists to create stunning looks. I have some few products from Maybelline and I love their results. I would really love to work with Maybelline in the near feature.

7.       7.How do you stay updated with the latest makeup trends and techniques? Do you attend workshops or follow any global makeup artists?

Staying updated with makeup trends can be super fun. Firstly, I watch YouTube tutorials to keep my skills fresh. There are countless makeup tutorials that showcase the latest techniques and products. Subscribing to beauty channels helps me learn new skills. After learning new skills, I experiment it by trying the techniques on myself or friends. I’m never afraid to play around with different looks.

Secondly, I attend workshops and masterclasses. Many makeup brands and artists offer workshops or online masterclasses. This is a great way to learn directly from professionals.  Reading beauty blogs and magazines also keeps up with beauty publications and provide insights into upcoming trends and product reviews. By incorporating these methods, I continuously improve my makeup artistry and stay on top of the latest trends.

8.       8.Could you share a memorable experience you’ve had while working with a client, whether it’s a celebrity or a bridal client?

All the session I’ve had with clients are always fun and memorable. It has also been my biggest pleasure collaborating with several celebrities in Kenya. The best memorable experience I had was when I worked with a certain bride on her wedding day. She was feeling nervous about her look, but after we discussed her vision and tried out a few different styles. She settled on a beautiful, flawless natural beauty look that made her feel like herself. When she saw her reflection for the first time. Her face lit up with joy as she had balancing tears which made me proud and emotional at the same time. It was such a rewarding moment for us both knowing that I helped boost her confidence on such a special day.

9.       9.What advice would you give to aspiring makeup artists in Kenya who are looking to establish themselves in the industry?

Build your skills by continuously improving your techniques and experimenting with different looks and staying updated on trends. You should also create your portfolio and document your work with high quality photos of your makeup looks. Most clients would love to see quality makeup portfolios. A strong portfolio will showcase your skills to potential clients and employers. Connect with other makeup artists, photographers, and influencers in the beauty industry. Attend events, collaborate on projects, and engage with others on social media to build relationships. By doing all that, stay professional. Always communicate clearly with clients, meet deadlines, and maintain a positive attitude. Professionalism goes a long way in building a good reputation.

10.  10. How do you balance creativity and client preferences, especially when a client requests something outside your typical style?

I listen actively to understand what the client is looking for. If their request is outside my usual style, I suggest an alternative that still aligns with their vision but might suit their features or skin type better. I will find a way to incorporate elements of my style into their request. For example, if they want a bold look but you typically do natural beauty, I consider a bold lip with a more subtle eye. If time allows, I try different looks during the trial session. This way, I explore their preferences while showcasing my creativity. Besides that, I always keep communication open and flexible.

11.   11.In your own opinion, how important is makeup in enhancing self-confidence, and how does your work impact the way people feel about themselves?

Makeup can play a significant role in enhancing self-confidence for many people. It allows individuals to express themselves, cover imperfections, and feel more put together. As a makeup artist, I work directly to impact how clients perceive themselves. When I create a look that aligns with their vision and enhances their features, it can boost their confidence immensely. Seeing themselves in a new light, especially with a look they love, can transform their mood and how they carry themselves. Its rewarding to know that your artistry can help people feel beautiful and empowered.

12.   12.What are your future goals for your career as a makeup artist, and how do you plan to leave a lasting impact on the beauty industry in Kenya?

As a makeup artist, my future goals include continuing to refine my skills and exploring new techniques to stay updated with trends. I also aim to promote inclusivity and diversity within the beauty industry in Kenya, ensuring that all skin tones are represented and celebrated. I plan to leave a lasting impact by collaborating with local brands, participating in workshops, and sharing knowledge through social media and tutorials. By empowering others to embrace their unique beauty and encouraging creativity, I hope to inspire a more inclusive beauty culture.

Understanding the Fitzpatrick Scale: Skin Type Classification and UV Light Protection

The Fitzpatrick Scale is a widely used system for classifying human skin types based on their response to ultraviolet (UV) light exposure. Developed by Dr. Thomas B. Fitzpatrick in 1975, the scale helps dermatologists and skincare professionals assess the risk of sun damage and tailor protective measures accordingly. The scale categorizes skin into six types, each with varying sensitivity to UV light and different susceptibilities to sunburn and tanning.

Fitzpatrick Skin Types:

  1. Type I: Very fair skin, often with red or blond hair and blue or green eyes. This skin type always burns and never tans, making it highly susceptible to UV damage.
  2. Type II: Fair skin, with light hair and eyes. This type usually burns and tans minimally. UV protection is crucial.
  3. Type III: Medium skin tone, common among people with darker white or lighter Asian complexions. This type sometimes burns and tans uniformly.
  4. Type IV: Olive or light brown skin, often seen in Mediterranean or Middle Eastern individuals. This type rarely burns and tans easily.
  5. Type V: Brown skin, common among individuals of African, East Indian, or Latin descent. This type very rarely burns and tans very easily.
  6. Type VI: Dark brown or black skin, typical of people with African ancestry. This type almost never burns and tans very easily.

UV Light Exposure and Risks:

Different skin types have varying levels of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color and natural UV protection. Fairer skin types (I and II) have less melanin, providing less natural protection, making them more prone to sunburn and long-term UV damage, such as skin cancer and premature aging. Darker skin types (V and VI), although having more melanin and natural protection, are not immune to UV damage and can suffer from hyperpigmentation and other sun-related issues.

Protecting Your Skin from UV Damage:

Regardless of skin type, sun protection is essential for preventing UV damage. Here are key measures to keep your skin safe:

  1. Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Apply generously and reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.
  2. Protective Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats to shield your skin from direct sunlight.
  3. Seek Shade: Avoid direct sun exposure, especially during peak hours (10 AM to 4 PM). Stay in the shade whenever possible.
  4. Sunglasses: Protect your eyes with UV-blocking sunglasses to prevent cataracts and other sun-related eye damage.
  5. Lip Balm with SPF: Don’t forget to protect your lips with a lip balm containing SPF.

By understanding your skin type according to the Fitzpatrick Scale and taking appropriate protective measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of UV damage and maintain healthy skin.
