People often struggle with giving and receiving feedback, mainly because we usually perceive anything other than praise as criticism. However, feedback is a critical step in enhancing performance, whether individually or as a team. In the world of sport, feedback is a natural part of the process - you wouldn’t expect an athlete to become their best without practice or coaching. This is equally the case in all areas of our personal or professional lives, and yet it is still difficult for many of us.
When we aren’t open to feedback or when we avoid sharing feedback with others due to discomfort, we can easily fall into “the potential trap”: not reaching our potential because of missed opportunities for improvement. At times we all have personal blind spots making it difficult to assess our development areas and appreciate how our actions are perceived, and gathering perspectives from others is one of the most effective ways to unveil these.
In fact, feedback is one of the most important tools you have at your disposal when it comes to developing a growth mindset
