For many students, the
journey of balancing academics with extracurricular activities is a challenge
but for one KCA University weightlifting enthusiast, Humphrey Omondi, it is a
journey of discipline, growth and personal triumph. His passion for weightlifting
began while he was still young, but he officially started lifting when the
desire to build both physical strength and confidence led him to the gym at his
first year on campus. What started as a simple curiosity has now evolved into a
meaningful pursuit of pushing boundaries and setting personal records.
Following a structured
bodybuilding program, he focuses on mastering the “big three” lifts: squats for
leg workout, bench press for chest and deadlift for back muscles. Of these
three, the bench press holds a special place in his heart, “There is something
deeply satisfying about lifting a heavy weight to and from your chest, it makes
me feel unstoppable,” he shared. Techniques and safety are paramount in his
routine. By watching instructional videos, seeking advice from experienced
lifters and recording their form, he ensures that every lift is executed with
precision. This commitment to proper form has not only elevated his performance
but also helped him reach significant milestone such as the unforgettable day
he bench-pressed twice his own body weight, a feat that stands as a testament
to his perseverance.
His pre-workout and
post-workout are just as deliberate as his training. Before each session, he
warms up with dynamic stretches and light cardio to prepare his body.
Afterwards, he takes protein shake and thorough stretching which becomes
essential components of his recovery. He also listens to his body, take rest
days when needed and incorporate foam rolling and massages into his routine to
get rid of injuries.
Being part of campus gym
brothers has added support, as the gym members not only share their passion but
also celebrate each other’s achievements, commenting on how far they see your
progress. To anyone willing to stepping into the weightroom, my advice is
simple; “start small and focus on learning proper form. Everyone starts
somewhere and there is no shame in asking for help,” he shared. For this
weightlifter, the journey is as much about self-improvement as it is about not
only lifting heavier but also proper form. He emphasizes the importance of
high-protein diet, quality sleep and above all hydration as knowing these
habits are essential for achieving his goals.
Through weightlifting, he
has discovered a passion that goes beyond just physical strength. It is a
pursuit that has shaped his mental resilience, boosted his confidence and
showed him the power of commitment. His story serves as a powerful reminder
that with dedication and the right mindset, anyone can conquer their challenges
both in the gym and in academics.
