Lucy Aka Afree Kanaah: The Kiambu Poet Using Spoken Word to Inspire Change

Lucy, popularly known as Afree Kanaah, is a rising voice in Kenya’s creative scene — a spoken word artist and poet with a deep passion for using art to spark conversations and inspire change. Based in Kiambu, Lucy is more than an artist; she is a mother, a dreamer, and a storyteller who channels her experiences into powerful performances.

Her journey into poetry began as a way to express emotions and make sense of life’s challenges. Over time, it became her platform to speak up on issues that matter, from mental health and resilience to the strength of single mothers. “Spoken word is my safe space, my way of sharing truths that others might be afraid to say out loud,” she says.

Being a mom has shaped Lucy’s perspective, giving her work more depth and urgency. Her child motivates her to keep pursuing her dreams and to create art that leaves a lasting impact. She believes that through poetry and spoken word, she can inspire others to embrace their struggles, celebrate their wins, and keep moving forward.

Lucy aspires to perform on bigger stages, collaborate with other creatives, and eventually build platforms that nurture young poets and spoken word artists across Kenya. Her ultimate goal is to prove that art has the power to heal, transform, and connect communities.

“I want my words to remind people that they are not alone,” she says. “If my story can touch even one soul, then I know I’m on the right path.”
