Walking in Purpose: Joan Mumbi Maina on Fashion, Faith, and Fearless Ambition

From childhood dreams to confidently owning the runway, Joan Mumbi Maina's fashion journey is a story of passion, resilience, and self-belief. Based in Thika, Joan has always been drawn to fashion, beauty, and creativity. Today, she continues to pursue modeling while building her future with ambition and purpose. In this exclusive Q&A, she shares her inspiring story, personal style, challenges, and advice for the next generation of aspiring models.

Q1: Please introduce yourself and tell us about your journey as an upcoming fashion model and college student in Thika.

Joan Mumbi : My journey into modeling actually started when I was in lower primary school. I loved wearing my mum's high heels, trying on her makeup and nail polish, and dressing up in my elder sister's clothes. Looking back, those little moments were the beginning of my passion.

In high school, one of my classmates, who was a fashion designer, selected me to model her designs during a competition. Although we didn't win, the experience opened my eyes to the world of fashion. Around the same time, my friends loved styling my hair and doing my makeup, but I simply thought it was girls having fun.

While in campus, many people—including photographers, former Miss University titleholders, and fellow students—encouraged me to pursue modeling. I even won the Best Dressed title during one of our faculty gala events, although there wasn't a modeling category.

After campus, a friend secretly entered me into a church youth modeling competition. I almost skipped it because I had only one day to prepare. However, I rushed home, picked an outfit, returned to the event, and ended up winning the Miss KAYO ACK Diocese of Thika title. That victory gave me the confidence to take modeling seriously.

Q2: What inspired your love for fashion, and when did you realize you wanted to pursue modeling?

Joan: My biggest inspirations have always been my mum and my sister. I've always admired elegant women and love blending a polished corporate look with my feminine side. My friends also saw modeling potential in me long before I accepted it myself. Their encouragement helped me realize this was something worth pursuing.

Q3: How do you balance your studies with your passion for fashion and modeling?

Joan: Honestly, it isn't easy. Modeling requires time, travel, and commitment, and balancing that with academic responsibilities can be challenging. I simply do my best to manage my schedule. Whenever there's an event, I make every effort to attend while ensuring I always present myself professionally with a neat and polished appearance.

Q4: How would you describe your personal fashion style, and what inspires your everyday looks?

Joan: I would describe my style as corporate, elegant, and confident—a "rich madam boss" kind of look. I'm inspired by the woman I'm becoming and the future I'm working towards. At the same time, I enjoy expressing my feminine side because I believe fashion should reflect different aspects of your personality. Knowing when and how to balance those styles is something I truly enjoy.

Q5: What challenges have you faced as an upcoming model, and what keeps you motivated?

Joan: One of the biggest challenges is dealing with stereotypes. Some people think fashion, beauty, and creativity aren't serious career paths, while others assume models are simply seeking attention or trying to outshine others.

What keeps me going is self-awareness, confidence, and knowing exactly who I am. I believe there's enough room for everyone to succeed. I stay optimistic, take responsibility for my actions, and trust God's purpose for my life. My greatest inspiration comes from Psalms 139:13–17, which reminds me that I was wonderfully made.

Q6: What are your future goals in the fashion industry, and what advice would you give to young people who dream of becoming fashion models?

Joan: My dream is to build multimillion-dollar beauty and fashion companies, including successful beauty parlors and fashion businesses that create opportunities for others.

To every young person with modeling dreams, believe in yourself and trust God because those are your strongest foundations. Stay in school and complete your education—never sacrifice your future for temporary distractions, relationships, or peer pressure. Focus on your goals, avoid drugs, take care of your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being, and always pray.

If you want to become a model, don't wait for the perfect opportunity. Start with the basics. Learn how to dress well, style your hair, walk confidently in heels, maintain good health, and keep improving yourself every day. Your journey begins the moment you decide to believe in your dream.
